ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – On Thursday, Sun Country Airlines began its first non-stop flight at the Rochester International Airport (RST).
The airline is offering non-stop flights to Fort Myers, Florida, and Phoenix, Arizona.
“Winter is the best time for us to get away and we just decided that last year was just too complicated and this year was our year to go. We’re just going to go for three weeks and hang out with really no agenda and enjoy the warm weather,” said Emily Fowler, a Fort Myers traveler.
The first Sun Country flight that arrived from Fort Myers landed around 3:30 p.m. RST said the plane can fit about 186 passengers. One passenger on that flight said there were fewer than 20 people on the plane, but the one departing was near capacity.
“It brings a brand new element to what we’re doing here at RST,” said John Reed, RST Executive Director. “In the past, we’ve really had a focus on the business traveler. Opportunities to work with Sun Country that really catered to your vacation style traveler are now here in Rochester.”
Sun Country’s arrival comes four months after United Airlines ended services at the airport.
RST said the Sun Country flights are seasonal, and as of now the airline website only lets travelers book flights through April.
“Bookings for the rest of the time here is looking good,” said Reed.
Phoenix flights begin Friday.
